History:
"Human bonds always lead to messy complications. Commitment. Sharing. Driving people to the airport."

Personality:
Dexter Morgan spends his adult life juggling several roles: a brother, a boyfriend, a blood spatter analyst for homicides at the Miami Metro Police Department, and a serial killer. On top of these things, he hides the fact that he is an extremely damaged person, having suffered a traumatic experience as a very young child. At the age of three, Dexter witnessed the gruesome murder of his mother. This experience shaped who Dexter truly is, giving birth to his "Dark Passenger." His entire childhood after being adopted by Harry Morgan, from age three to young adulthood, is plagued with issues reflecting this horrific experience. As a young boy, Dexter's violent tendencies manifest in the form of killing neighborhood pets. At this point, it is realized that he is a textbook sociopath with an innate need to kill, to satisfy the demons within telling him he needs to do these things. His adoptive father takes Dexter and channels these homicidal tendencies into what Dexter is today, by giving him a code to follow. To satisfy these urges, his behavior shifts from killing animals as a young child to killing humans as a young adult. As a part of Harry's Code, Dexter is instructed to never kill an innocent person and he sticks to the code, directing his tendencies toward criminals, specifically murderers. The Dexter that Harry knew, that is hidden from everybody but himself, is what he sees as the "true" Dexter Morgan.

Harry took Dexter in after the murder of his father, shaping him into what he is today with his instruction and his code. Upon learning that his father killed himself as a result of seeing the monster he created, Dexter begins to reject drawing on past experiences with Harry, struggling with the fact that he was the reason for his father's death. Not long after Dexter learns this fact, he begins seeing Harry as an hallucination that both converses with him and gives him advice regarding his behavior and choices he makes when going after a new target for a kill. Harry becomes a physical manifestation of Dexter's Dark Passenger. Dexter is extremely close to the remaining member his family, adoptive sister Debra Morgan, watching out for her at times like a "normal" protective older brother. However, despite the lengths he goes to to keep his secret from her, he still values the relationship he has with his sister, even envisioning several worst-case-scenarios where he tells her that he is the "Bay Harbor Butcher," (a name he personally hates).

Since early childhood, Dexter has felt the call of what he refers to as his "Dark Passenger," something deep within him driving him and encouraging his urge to kill. He keeps the "Dark Passenger" at bay, controlling his demons and desires to kill with killing only those deserving death. The Dark Passenger was born when Dexter was a small child, upon witnessing the gruesome murder of his mother. Dexter's dark passenger has not completely taken control, but constantly fuels his urge to kill, to the point that it sometimes becomes unbearable. When he can't satisfy this urge, he becomes extremely irritable and is driven to near madness until he can kill again. At times like these, he is unable to ignore the voice and "lets the Dark Passenger do the driving." The Dark Passenger takes advantage of emotionally charged situations, catching Dexter when he is in the moment and filled with intense emotion. During a situation where emotions were running high, the Dark Passenger took control, forcing Dexter to kill a man he knew nothing about.

Dexter puts on the face of a science geek as a blood splatter analyst for Miami Metro homicides. Here, his interactions with his co-workers and attempts to maintain a "normal" cover can be seen. A majority of the people he works with find Dexter to be strange, but attribute that to his line of work, as the fellow lab-guy for homicides is also an incredibly strange individual. Sgt. James Doakes, however, is suspicious of Dexter's behavior and picture-perfect history, calling him a "creep job," telling the blood spatter analyst that he gives him "the fucking creeps," and threatening to submit him for a psychiatric evaluation. Doakes is the only co-worker who finds Dexter's behavior suspect, eventually pursuing him during non-work hours. To everybody else, Dexter is a trusty blood spatter analyst, always called to crime scenes due to his sense about murders, expertise, and attention to detail. Dexter goes to many lengths to disguise himself and keep his disguise as believable as possible, even joining the homicides bowling team.

To continue maintaining a "normal" life, Dexter enters a relationship with a woman named Rita as part of his disguise. Initially, his interest and relationship with Rita was nothing more than a cover for his true nature, convinced that he would never be able to maintain a proper relationship. As a result, he chooses Rita to form that relationship with. In his words, he "chose Rita because she's as damaged as" he is. She was beaten and married to a heroin addict and, as a result, had no interest in sex at the time she entered the relationship with Dexter. Dexter, far from normal, also has no interest in sex, so this relationship was perfect to further perfect his disguise. Not only does Dexter grow to love spending time with Rita, he also enjoys spending time with her two children, Cody and Astor. Despite his sociopathic nature, Dexter loves children. He tells one of his victims that he has standards, saying "but children, I couldn't do that, not like you. Never, ever, kids."

For most of his life, Dexter has had two distinct personalities. The first, and hidden, of these being the sociopath, the monster, the killer, the one linked to the Dark Passenger. The other being the Dexter Morgan, son of Harry Morgan, that everybody sees and loves. From a very young age, Dexter showed signs of being a textbook sociopath, showing no "human" emotions, irresponsibility, a lack of fear, and a lack of remorse. Thanks to his adoptive father, he was able to develop two distinct selves, his "true" self and the self he showed the rest of the world. These two personalities, however, are starting to intertwine, blurring the distinct lines Dexter has created between his public and private life. While he is still the serial killer following Harry's code, he is actually realizing that there may be an actual human hidden deep within what he once thought was an empty shell of a man.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
Dexter is an incredibly intelligent man, having become familiar with a variety of techniques and skills in forensics. Outside of his profession, he is extremely adept at manipulation, able to display a necessary amount of emotion when necessary despite his lack of empathy. As well as his ability to manipulate, he is also a skilled liar. Coworkers have pointed out that Dexter has seemingly settled for a job far below his intellectual ability and that he is an exceptionally good deductive analyst. Using this intelligence to his advantage, Dexter relies on counter-offensive strategic thinking to catch his opponents and victims in situations that allow them to make the first move, resulting in the exploitation of a weak or blind spot. He generally uses stealth and sneak attacks to render his victims immobile.

When vetting and stalking, Dexter exercises his ability to break and enter, gather information, track, and, eventually, kill. As a general rule, he is easily able to physically subdue his victims, both with his own strength and through the use of M99. The first rule of his code is "Don't get caught," so being in peak physical strength is necessary. Dexter stays in peak physical condition by engaging in daily cardio, which contributes to his ability to run, fight, endure, and keep his energy up. To aid in his subduing victims, and in case Dexter is up against somebody much larger, he is very skilled in hand-to-hand combat, having mastered advanced jujitsu during his college years. A coworker, during a struggle against Dexter, exclaimed "Lab geek, my ass!" As a result of this training, Dexter is able to disarm an opponent, subdue most targets by using a rear choke hold that cuts off their oxygen supply, and break bones (necks included) if absolutely necessary.

As a child and young adult, Dexter was trained in marksmanship by his father. He has been seen as both a teenager and an adult making accurate shots on both shooting ranges and in combat situations. While a capable marksman that can use a handgun and a rifle with precision, he prefers to use methods other than firearms.

Dexter's weaknesses lie in human interaction. He struggles with maintaining close relationships with most people, including his girlfriend, Rita, and his sister, Deb. Hiding the fact that he's a serial killer from everybody in his life is overwhelming, at times, and Dexter never lets people get too close to him for this reason. He shows the textbook signs for being a sociopath at a young age, showing no "human" emotions, irresponsibility, a lack of fear, and a lack of remorse. Over time, he has been able to control those things, but this results in every relationship he forms, with the exception of his late father, being built on lies.

Prose Log Sample:
The days numbered among the dozens since his last kill, and it gets harder with each day to find things to silence the growing voice inside his head. His "Dark Passenger," if you will. Killing calms him, much like a cigarette for a smoker or a bottle of whiskey for an alcoholic. After all, he has an addiction, and admitting that is the first step toward recovery, right? But, like a true addict, he can't stay away from it. Vetting, stalking, and killing drives Dexter Morgan, and he feeds off of each and every experience.

But this one, this is something new and exciting. Miami is diverse, that's for sure, but this is a challenge he has never been faced with. His name was the first thing that caught Dexter's eye - a famous serial killer, easily recognizable to those who kept up with that sort of thing. The vetting began when he had dinner with the man. The cuisine was extravagant, that's for sure, but there was something about it that didn't sit right with Dexter. The meat for dinner was, supposedly, pork, but it didn't taste like any cut of pork that Dexter had ever taken a bite of in Miami. After the dinner, Dexter made it a point to need a bit of therapy, dealing with some issues still bothering him from home, the usual deal. Once confident in the doctor's daily schedule, it became time to break into his house, gather a little evidence, and plan for the kill.

"A cannibal. A consumer of human flesh."

Dexter looks down at the man, his body naked and covered in plastic wrap. The entire room is ready, photos numbering in the dozens along the walls, every surface covered in sheets of protective plastic, and the tools of his trade displayed like an artist's paintbrushes. It is a beautiful sight.

"You're disgusting."

This trophy will be treasured, the first among many. A package of 100 blank slides and a box to hold them had already been purchased, nothing out of the ordinary for a man who works in a lab for a living. He selects the steak knife, a fitting choice for somebody like Hannibal Lecter, and slices across his right cheek. As the blood flows, Dexter gets a small spatula and takes a sample, smearing it on to an empty microscope slide. Another clean slide is carefully placed on top, preserving the blood. Blood is something he enjoys and these slides, these trophies, are little tokens from each and every victim. It has always been a part of his life, since a very early age, and he has no plans to let another world get in the way. He holds the slide to the light, looking at the small red circle in the middle.

Perfect.

"You're a very rude man, Mr. Morgan."

Dexter rolls his eyes, "Bite me."

He stuffs a handful of gauze into Hannibal's mouth, silencing the cannibal before he gets to work. Time is of the essence and the adrenaline is coursing through his veins. The butcher knife is his selection for the kill. Kitchen tools are easy to acquire and wonderful to work with... And very fitting when killing somebody who uses these same tools to consume his own victims. A peaceful calm washes over Dexter as he lifts the knife and plunges it into his heart, holding it still until the good doctor is dead, letting the blood pour from the open wound in his chest. He doesn't dare move, not for several seconds. He wants to savor the moment, the first of many kills in his new home.
